The large ball in the center of the fixture probably added to the romantic atmosphere with the gas lighting reflecting off its curved surfaces, giving the impression of a chandelier with many more lights than it actually had.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt this time is was not unusual to mix two types of gas burners on one fixture. The two different tiers of arms originally held candle lights on the upper tier and wide spread gas burners with shades on the bottom tier. This gave a dual use as low light, and brighter light. Sort of a gas light equivalent of our electric dimmer switches of today. For our chandelier, we chose to make all the arms the same size, but left the two-tier effect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFixture uses 4\" fitter shades. Shades are sold separately. We picture \u003ca href=\"\/products\/etched-floral-design-glass-gas-shade-4-fitter\"\u003e073G\u003c\/a\u003e as a suggestion. Dress up this fixture by using fancy shades such as our hand-cut glass shades \u003ca href=\"\/products\/handcut-glass-shade-lead-crystal-4-fitter\"\u003e0245G\u003c\/a\u003e .\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003epictured here also are a few charming additions to a room holding this chandelier. Look for the spin-cast brass ball on sconces such as \u003ca href=\"\/products\/victorian-triple-gas-and-electric-wall-sconce-light\"\u003e606-TRP-SA\u003c\/a\u003e , and \u003ca href=\"\/products\/victorian-or-edwardian-double-arm-sconce\"\u003e604-DAE-ES\u003c\/a\u003e . Tie into the beautiful pierced brass detail on the canopy and fitters by using newel post light \u003ca href=\"\/products\/pierced-brass-gas-and-electric-newel-post-light-circa-1890\"\u003e299-FGE-NW\u003c\/a\u003e . By 1890 electricity was being phased in, so the transitional sconce and newel post are appropriate to the period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFixture is 46\" tall, but can be shortened to 28\". Spread: 39\". For shortening, note that the disk that holds the chains at the stem is adjustable up and down with a set screw making shortening easy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough the 10 sockets rated for higher than 100 watts each, we recommend no more than a total of 1,000 watts, due to the heat.
